How to Sign Out of Apple ID / Google Before Selling

Updated 21 June 2026

Signing out of your account is the single most important step before selling — more important even than the reset. It releases the security lock that ties the phone to you, so the next owner can actually use it, and it confirms none of your accounts are left on the device. Here is how to do it cleanly on both iPhone and Android.

⚠️ Know your password first. You need your Apple Account or Google password to sign out. If you are not sure of it, reset it now at iforgot.apple.com (Apple) or Google account recovery — before you wipe anything.

Why this step matters

Both Apple and Google build in an anti-theft lock that survives a factory reset:

  • iPhone — Activation Lock: tied to your Apple Account via Find My. If it is still on, the phone demands your password after a reset and is unusable to anyone else.
  • Android — Factory Reset Protection (FRP): tied to your Google account. If your account is still on the phone when it is reset, the next person is locked out at setup.

Signing out switches both of these off, which is exactly what you want before selling.

Sign out of your Apple Account (iPhone)

The automatic way

If you use Erase All Content and Settings to reset (the recommended method), signing out happens for you when you enter your Apple Account password during the erase. You can stop here if you are resetting that way — see factory reset an iPhone.

The manual way

To sign out before resetting:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap [your name] at the very top.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Sign Out.
  4. Enter your Apple Account password to turn off Find My and release Activation Lock.
  5. Choose whether to keep a copy of data on the device (it does not matter — you are about to erase it).
  6. Tap Sign Out to confirm.

For more on the Find My side of this, see remove Find My iPhone before selling.

Remove your Google account (Android)

On Android, you remove the account rather than "signing out":

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Passwords and accounts (on some phones, Accounts or Users and accounts).
  3. Select your Google account.
  4. Tap Remove account and confirm.
  5. If you have more than one Google account, remove each one.

ℹ️ Samsung phones: also remove your Samsung account under Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts, so nothing stays linked.

Once your accounts are off, you can safely factory reset your Android phone.

Confirm you are signed out

A quick check before you reset:

  • iPhone: open Settings — if you see "Sign in to your iPhone" at the top instead of your name, you are signed out.
  • Android: Settings > Passwords and accounts shows no Google account listed.

Quick sign-out checklist

  • Apple Account or Google password known (reset it if not)
  • iPhone: signed out of Apple Account / Find My off
  • Android: Google account removed
  • Samsung: Samsung account removed too
  • Confirmed no account remains on the device
  • Ready to factory reset

Then reset and sell

With your accounts off the phone, the lock is cleared and you can wipe the device as the final step. See the complete pre-sale checklist to make sure nothing is missed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I sign out of my Apple Account before selling my iPhone?

Go to Settings, tap your name at the top, scroll down, and tap Sign Out. Enter your Apple Account password to turn off Find My and release Activation Lock. Using Erase All Content and Settings does this automatically.

How do I remove my Google account before selling Android?

Go to Settings > Passwords and accounts (or Accounts), tap your Google account, then Remove account. This clears Factory Reset Protection so the next owner can set the phone up.

Why do I need to sign out before selling?

Signing out releases the lock that ties the phone to you: Activation Lock on iPhone and Factory Reset Protection on Android. Without signing out, the next owner cannot use the device even after a reset.

What if I forgot my Apple Account or Google password?

Reset it before you wipe the phone. For Apple use iforgot.apple.com, and for Google use the account recovery page. You need the password to sign out and clear the lock.
