What to Do With Your SIM and eSIM Before Selling
Updated 21 June 2026
Your SIM and your phone are two separate things — the handset is what you are selling, but your number, your line, and your carrier account stay with you. Sorting this out before collection takes a couple of minutes and stops you accidentally handing over an active line. Here is exactly what to do for both physical SIMs and eSIMs.
⚠️ Do this before the final wipe. Settle your SIM and eSIM first, then get your quote, book collection, and factory reset last.
Physical SIM: just take it out
If your phone uses a small plastic SIM card, this is simple.
- Find the SIM ejector tool (the little metal pin) or use a straightened paperclip.
- Locate the SIM tray on the side of the phone and press the pin into the small hole.
- The tray pops out — remove your SIM card and keep it safe.
- Push the empty tray back in so the phone is tidy for its new owner.
Slot that same SIM into your next phone and your number comes straight across. Keep the SIM — never leave it in a phone you are selling.
What about contacts saved on the SIM?
Most contacts these days live in your iCloud or Google account, not on the SIM. If you saved any directly to the SIM, they travel with the card, but it is still worth confirming your backup is complete before you sell.
eSIM: transfer or cancel with your carrier
An eSIM is a digital SIM stored inside the phone — there is no card to pull out. That means you have to deal with it deliberately, because a factory reset will erase the eSIM profile.
You have two options:
Option 1 — Transfer it to your new phone
If you are upgrading, move the eSIM across:
- iPhone to iPhone: during setup of the new iPhone, choose to transfer your eSIM, or use Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data > Add eSIM > Transfer from Nearby iPhone.
- Any phone: contact du or e& (Etisalat) and ask them to move your number to the new device. They can reissue the eSIM via a QR code or app activation.
Option 2 — Cancel or park the line
If you are not replacing the phone right away, contact du or e& to either pause the line or move the number onto a physical SIM you can keep. Do this before wiping the phone.
ℹ️ Never hand over an active line. If you leave a working eSIM on the phone, the new owner could end up with your number and your bill. Always confirm with your carrier that the line is off the device.
Remove the eSIM from the phone
Once your number is safely transferred or cancelled, remove the leftover profile:
- iPhone: Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data, tap the plan, then Delete eSIM. (The final factory reset also clears it.)
- Android: Settings > Network and internet > SIMs, select the eSIM, then Erase eSIM.
Quick SIM and eSIM checklist
- Physical SIM removed and kept
- Empty SIM tray pushed back in
- eSIM transferred to new phone, or cancelled with du or e&
- eSIM profile deleted from the phone
- Ready to sign out of your accounts and reset
Then finish your prep
With the SIM out and the eSIM handled, you can complete the rest of your prep using the full pre-sale checklist. When you are set, get your instant quote and book a free insured home collection anywhere in the UAE — you are paid the same day once your phone is confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Should I take my SIM out before selling my phone?
Yes. Remove the physical SIM with the ejector tool and keep it. Your number, contacts on the SIM, and carrier account stay with you, and you can pop the SIM into your next phone.
What happens to my eSIM when I sell my phone?
An eSIM is stored inside the phone, not on a removable card. Before selling, transfer it to your new phone or ask du or e and to move or cancel it. A factory reset removes the eSIM profile, so do not reset until the transfer is sorted.
Can I keep my UAE number when I sell my phone?
Yes. Your number belongs to your carrier account, not the handset. Move it to a new SIM or eSIM with du or e and and you keep the same number.
Will a factory reset delete my eSIM?
Yes. Erasing the phone removes the eSIM profile from the device. Always transfer or cancel the eSIM with your carrier before you do the final reset.
