How to wipe your MacBook before selling
- Back up with Time Machine or to an external drive.
- Sign out of iCloud, iMessage, and your Apple Account.
- Turn off Find My (System Settings > [your name] > Find My) to clear Activation Lock.
- Erase:
- Apple Silicon / T2 Macs: System Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Older Intel Macs: restart into Recovery (hold ⌘R), use Disk Utility to erase the drive, then reinstall macOS.
⚠️ Don't hand over a Mac still signed in to your Apple Account — Activation Lock will leave the buyer locked out. The principle is the same as removing Find My on an iPhone.
